PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Centrally located on the Gulf of Mexico and I-10 corridor between Louisiana and Alabama, Gulfport is an important business and transportation hub for the Gulf Coast. Development has been strong and continues to expand in the area. Join us to learn more about the exciting projects in Gulfport, including Centennial Plaza, Mississippi Aquarium, The Markham Hotel, Street Scape in downtown Gulfport and other major corridor developments. Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes and Kurt Allen, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Mississippi Aquarium, will provide updates and details on these and other upcoming projects.

Mayor Billy Hewes
, was most recently re-elected Mayor of Gulfport, Mississippi’s second largest city, and is putting his experience to good use in building relationships and putting together a team of city leaders to maximize the opportunities ahead for his community. Elected to public service in 1992, Billy represented the interests of South Mississippi in the Mississippi Senate for 20 years, serving as President Pro Tempore in his last term. Among other roles, he has served as national chairman of the American Legislative Exchange Council and as chairman of the Gulf States Marine Fisheries Commission. In addition, Billy served as chairman of the Senate Ports and Marine Resources Committee and Highways and Transportation Committee, was the founding chairman of the Mississippi National Guard Legislative Caucus, and was named Mississippi Association of Realtors Legislator of the Year. A graduate of Leadership Mississippi and Leadership Gulf Coast, Hewes is a member of the Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce, Gulfport Rotary Club and is a past president of the Gulfport Jaycees. He currently serves as 2nd Vice President of the Mississippi Municipal League and a member of the Board of Directors of the South Mississippi Planning and Development District.

Kurt Allen, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Mississippi Aquarium, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Restaurant, Hotel and Institutional Management from Purdue University, and started his 30+ year hospitality career with Hyatt Hotels in Chicago. Kurt started his 30+ year hospitality career with Hyatt Hotels in Chicago and has held managerial and executive leadership positions at Pebble Beach Resorts, Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows, Dolphin Quest Hawaii, Carmel Valley Ranch Resort and Portola Hotel and Spa, and Marineland Dolphin Adventure at the Georgia Aquarium. In January of 2018, Allen began his new role as the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for the Mississippi Aquarium opening in 2019. He will lead the pre-opening and construction teams and develop the business operation model.
